Most 180 lb bucks,or smaller die within 35 feet, or less when a nice pie size patterns hits their vitals. At 80 yards 1 00 buck pellet WILL kill a deer if it hits the vitals, but you are going to want to wait for the deer to lay down and die nearby. I have also used #4 3 inch buck shot effectively on a buck and he went 30 yards and crashed dead. .

Tight modified, improved modified, and full chokes seem to be the best for the trap shooter past 35 yards. Powder selection and wad selection are a consideration for the reloading trap shooter. Best pattern density is achieved by a slightly slower burn rate type powders, such as IMR PB, Alliant Green Dot, and Hodgdon International Clays to name ... I've kill a lot of deer with buckshot from a 20 to a 12 3", from ten feet to 90 yards over 25 years. My advice on it is to avoid it unless absolutely the only option. Gives you a starting point but you can easily figure it out by practicing way before the season. From Nitro - Remington 870, Rhino .660 choke, 12 gauge with 3" magnum rounds of 00 buckshot. "All 18 pellets in a 22" circle at 50 yards". That will do a deer in easily. Keep it under 50 and if you are going to take running shots, practice it. I took a shotgun out once and patterned it with all kinds of buckshot loads and chokes, and in that gun I had the best patterns with #1 3" magnum in a full choke. Since then I have killed a lot of deer with that shotgun and load/choke. All within 40 yards.
